A piano hinge, also known as a continuous hinge, is a long and narrow type of hinge that tends to span the entire length of a door or lid. Just as it sounds, the name for this hinge originally comes from the type of hinge made to affix the heavy lid of a piano to the body of a piano. These hinges are made up of two continuous leaves that are centrally conjoined by brass or stainless steel pins. The pins rotate freely because the knuckle lengths are hinged at multiple points. Most piano hinges are made of aluminum, brass, or stainless steel. The center to center is the distance from the center of one screw hole to another. Most manufacturers use this measurement to identify the size of the pull.
